Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one of the NDIS supports that participants may want to include in their NDIS plan if one of their goals is to live more independently. Finding a home and being able to perform daily tasks independently is one of the best ways to achieve greater independence and freedom. Support Independent Living (SIL) enables individuals with disabilities to live independently in their own homes by providing personal support, assistance with household chores, and transportation to community access activities. Participants in Supported Independent Living will have the opportunity to develop their social skills because they will live with other participants. Registered NDIS service providers of SIL services can assist participants in finding compatible roommates.
With the assistance of our trained staff, you can complete your daily tasks, personal care, household management, and recreational activities without disturbing your loved ones or roommates.
The purpose of SIL funding is to assist NDIS participants in living independently. NDIA also evaluates whether SIL funding will aid a participant in:
In other words, SIL funding must not only assist a participant in achieving independent living, but also in becoming an active and empowered community member. It should also contribute to reducing the total number of supports they require.
It is also essential to remember that the purpose of SIL is not to allow participants to remain in their permanent residence. However, the NDIA will consider the preferences of participants.
SIL funding assists participants with personal care and daily activities. For instance, it could be utilised for:
However, SIL funding cannot be used to pay for essentials such as rent or mortgage payments, bills, and groceries. Neither can it be used for home improvements.
Supported independent living is distinct from core supports and capacity-building supports, despite occasional overlap in tasks and objectives. Consequently, SIL cannot be funded through a participant’s budget for core support. It can only be financed through the SIL budget.
The SIL provider is responsible for developing a proposed roster of care that outlines the participant’s SIL service delivery based on the amount and type of assistance required. In addition to standard assistance, the roster of care may also include high-intensity, overnight, and irregular assistance.
The NDIA will then approve the roster of care and allocate the participant’s NDIS plan with the appropriate amount of funding.
In addition to receiving SIL funding, recipients will also receive funding for support coordination. The support coordinator will ensure that the participant is satisfied with their care schedule and the delivery of SIL services.
The five most important advantages of choosing SIL are:
It is among the most liberating experiences to move into a space that one can call their own. It allows them, perhaps for the first time in their lives, to make their own decisions and design their own lives.
Personal care, daily living skills, household management, the development of social and communication skills, and overnight support are provided by the trained and experienced SupportNest staff at SIL locations. When a person chooses SIL, they experience independence while having access to expert staff support whenever they require it.
SIL provides extraordinary opportunities to make new friends with similar ages and interests. Various SIL locations feature shared kitchens, living rooms, and outdoor spaces. Daily living with others allows for the development of social and communication skills.
Moving to a new home is a significant milestone in a person’s life, and it brings with it new opportunities. Living in a new location provides an opportunity to consider what is significant and how one wishes to live. It also provides the opportunity to discover new interests, activities, and locations.
SupportNest’s objective is to maintain a safe environment, regardless of whether a person chooses to live alone or with others. Individuals who reside in SIL have the freedom to express themselves by decorating and arranging their living spaces and bedrooms as they see fit.
Staff will be on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist SIL members with disabilities. SupportNest’s personnel are highly trained in emergency response and ensuring everyone’s safety.
