DOES THE NDIS PROVIDE FUNDING FOR DIABETES CARE?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded programme that provides assistance and funding to people with permanent and significant disabilities. The NDIS can support diabetics, but only if their condition has resulted in a permanent disability. Diabetes is considered a disease and not a disability, so it does not qualify for NDIS funding on its own. It is intended to assist people with disabilities in achieving their goals and living more independently. This includes providing access to funding for medical and therapeutic services, equipment, and other support for people living with disability. The NDIS can also provide Epilepsy Plan for people with epilepsy in a variety of ways.

However, if your diabetes has resulted in amputation of a limb or blindness, this is considered a significant permanent disability and you are therefore eligible for NDIS support and Diabetes Care. However, a doctor or diabetes nurse can create a Diabetes Care Plan for a Participant who has been diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetes frequently coexists with another disability. If this is the case, and your disability qualifies you for NDIS funding, your diabetes can also be managed with your NDIS funding. This is only possible if your disability prevents you from managing your diabetes independently.

Below are some Support Services For Diabetes that can be funded by the NDIS under Diabetes Management Support

  • Providing a nurse to develop a disability-related diabetes management plan that explains the assistance required for a Participant to follow your Diabetes Care Plan.
  • Diabetes management training for support workers.
  • A support worker to monitor glucose levels and administer insulin or other diabetes medication to the Participant.
  • The health-care system does not provide participants with access to assistive technology to help them manage their diabetes.
If a Participant truly requires a disability management plan and meets the NDIS funding criteria, they can be funded by a nurse who will develop a disability-related management plan for them. This may include funding for the following:
  • an initial consultation
  • a nurse to write the plan
  • a nurse to review the plan and make any necessary changes
Participants must go through the National Diabetes Services Scheme or the health care system to obtain assistive technology for Diabetes Support Services. The NDIS will only include assistive technology for diabetes management if there is evidence that:
  • The assistive technology will reduce the need for other supports, such as a support worker or nurse; and
  • It will help the participant be more independent due to a participant’s diabetes due to disability.
  • The participant must provide evidence to the NDIS that meets the NDIS funding criteria.
